Milwaukee, WI - Native American recording artists, BLACKFIRE received the "Best Pop/Rock Album Award" for their latest album entitled "One Nation Under" at the 5th annual Native American Music Awards. The award was presented to the Dine’ trio of siblings, BLACKFIRE, at the national awards ceremony by former members of Cheap Trick and Santana. BLACKFIRE accepted the award to an ovation of nearly 3,000 people. "It’s not about competition," stated Blackfire drummer Clayson Benally when accepting the award, “we are all winners here, we all move forward.” "We’re very surprised, grateful and humble, thank you to all those who have supported and inspired us." said bassist and vocalist Jeneda Benally. "This also goes out to all those who can’t celebrate with us here tonight, who are resisting those forms of injustice that we sing about, whether they are in Big Mountain, Leavenworth penitentiary (where political prisoner Leonard Peltier is incarcerated), Iraq, Afghanistan or Palestine." said guitarist and vocalist Klee Benally. BLACKFIRE’s recording, "One Nation Under", was also nominated for 2 other Native American Music Awards. BLACKFIRE Producer, Don Fleming, was nominated for "Best Producer". Don Fleming is also known as a producer for Sonic Youth, Hole, Screaming Trees, and Joan Jett. "One Nation Under" also gained recognition for late godfather of punk, Joey Ramone, with a nomination for "Native Heart Award". Joey Ramone contributed his final recorded vocal appearances on "One Nation Under". BLACKFIRE’s album "One Nation Under" is now available nationally; "One Nation Under" is the first punk/alternative album to be distributed by Canyon Records, the second oldest independent record company in the U.S.
